DESCRIPTION: John Bliss & Co, New York, marine chronometer with 56-hour winding indicator supplied to the US Navy on August 2nd, 1912, mounted within gimbaled brass tub in a three-tier brass bound mahogany box with recessed drop handles, silvered dial of approximately 4 inch diameter signed "John Bliss & Co. New York No. 3088," KWKS, fusee-drive with spring detent escapement, free-sprung bi-metallic compensation balance with gold helical hairspring, movement ebauche by Victor Kullberg, s#3088 with matching serial number to dial and within tub. This particular chronometer's movement was purchased directly from Victor Kullberg in 1909 for the sum of $129.97. Bliss then had the box, gimbals, dial, etc, made and fitted; following this he went on to adjust the chronometer at which point he submitted it to the USNO for trial in 1912. This chronometer finished 11th overall in the trial with a rate of -3.33 seconds, following the trial the Navy purchased it for $375.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good winding indicator function, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, light spotting to plates; excellent-plus dial with light spotting at perimeter; excellent-plus gold hands; tub and gimbals in excellent overall condition with several light dings; brass bound box top lid has been replaced at some point and has a distinct color difference, otherwise in excellent overall cosmetic condition.
